Speaker: Martin Beek
Pieter Breughel the Elder: Wed 17th March 2pm - 3:15pm
Rembrandt: Wed 24th March 2pm - 3:15pm
Following on from The Classics: An Introduction earlier in the year, this two-part series sees Martin provide an introduction to the life and works of two more of the best known artists in history.
Breughel the Elder - Join us on a look at one of the most important artists of the northern Renaissance. Many of his paintings are full of humour as well as a deep understanding of human nature. They offer insights into the world of the past and bring the life of common people of the 16th Century into sharp focus. Many of the original pictures for this talk were taken by Martin in Brussels and New York.
Rembrandt - Possibly one of the greatest artists who has ever lived. This talk explores Rembrandt’s unique insight into human nature; his complete mastery of oil paint in depicting human flesh and character. Both as a printmaker and painter Rembrandt excelled. His life was full of drama and tragedy, and he ponders these things in his self portraits from youth to “old age.”
