Saturday 20th February 2021
This four-part series of lectures, demonstrations and throw-down challenges will be delivered by Brody Neuenschwander. As part of the series, students will be challenged to create their own exciting and unconventional art. Brody joins us fresh from the completion of The Secret History of Writing, shown on TV channels across the world. This will be a unique way to interact with him as an artist and expert in his field, and an opportunity to participate in a calligraphic collaboration on a grand scale!
Places will be limited to 30 participants. Each of the first three sessions in the series will comprise a 60-minute live lecture & demo, followed by 30 minutes of open Q&A.
During the Q&A, Brody will set a creative challenge for students to take up after each session. This will culminate in a gallery display, discussion and critique of student work in the final session of the series.
Session One: Text in Contemporary Art - Sat 12th December 2020
How artists since 1900 have used text in their visual artworks: Brody will examine a new arrival on the art scene in the early 20th century: Text Art.
From Dada to Surrealism, Conceptualism to Pop, artists of the modern period have used words in their paintings, videos and installations. Calligraphers have tended to ignore these important developments and have rarely allowed influences from Text Art to creep into their own work. Why has this happened? The challenge Brody will extend to participants in this session is to use non-calligraphic letters to design a concept led work of art.
Session Two: Comparative Calligraphy - Sat 16th January 2021
A behind the scenes account of the making of The Secret History of Writing (the three part documentary aired on the BBC in September 2020).
In this session Brody will be looking especially at Latin, Arabic and Chinese scripts, how they work, how they differ, and how each script made the transition to print technology. Brody will outline the challenge from this session, which will be to use Chinese Seal Script to inspire new shapes and arrangements of the Latin letters.
Session Three: An intimate exploration of Brody’s own work - Sat 6th February 2021
Brody works in many media, from paper and canvas to film, metal, glass, textile, human skin, sculpture, and architecture. He often twists letters into new shapes and applies them to new surfaces. The challenge from this session will be to write letters that, one by one, diverge from the norms we all accept as calligraphers.
Session Four: The Participant’s Gallery - Sat 20th February 2021
In this final session, the full 90 minutes will be used to explore the gallery of student work submitted over the two months of the lecture series (anonymous if you wish!). Brody will offer his critique and commentary on the work submitted in advance by email. The Ardington team will create a digital montage of all the work received, which will be shared with all participants – a calligraphic collaboration on a grand scale!!
