Fri 23rd April 10am - 11:30am workshop demo
Fri 7th May 10am - 11am follow up and feedback
(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for beginners through to intermediate bookbinders.
Workshop details
Coptic stitch is a beautiful style of binding with an exposed stitch spine that looks like chain stitch. These books have an open spine which means the pages open completely flat. Coptic style books are ideal as gifts or to keep for yourself as a diary or notebook
During this workshop, Janina will show you all the steps to make an A5 portrait book from scratch, using Coptic stitch to bind the book.
First you will prepare the covers; cutting them from greyboard, covering with decorative paper, and then allowing them to dry. Next Janina will teach you how to prepare the inside pages by trimming cartridge paper into the right size for the book and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’.
You will then be shown how to make holes in the covers and the papers for sewing and will finally learn how to sew all the pages and cover together using Coptic stitch.
Ideally students will have a go at making a Coptic stitch book (or two!) before the follow up show and tell session. In the show and tell, students are encouraged to show their handmade Coptic stitch books and to ask any further questions they may have.

You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

- Lots of tips for painless measuring, cutting and gluing
- Advice on suitable papers and paper grain

Essential tools
- Cutting mat
- Sharp cutting knife or craft knife (not a scalpel, as this is too delicate)
- Metal ruler
- Scissors
- Sharp pencil
- Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (eg tapestry needle size 20)
- Small sharp awl or braddle (for making holes in paper and card)
- Small foam roller and tray, or a stencil (flat ended) brush, for glueing
Optional tools if you have them
- Bone folder (for creasing paper)
- T square ruler (for getting accurate 90 degree corners)
- Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (this is only needed if you have A3 or larger cartridge paper and it needs to be cut down to A4)
Materials
- Greyboard – Janina uses 2mm greyboard but you could use the back of a sketchpad
- Paper for inside pages – I use 140gsm cartridge
- Linen thread – this size book needs approx. 10 feet of waxed linen thread. I use 18/3 or 16/3 from Hewit
- Decorative paper for the covers – the soft Indian printed papers work well, as does wallpaper. Shiny crispy wrapping paper is hard to work with as it wrinkles like mad. It’s best to test your paper with the PVA before embarking on your project.
- Waxed paper – I use the waxed paper from inside boxes of cereal
- PVA – use good quality (not too runny)
- Scrap paper for gluing
