ArtTalk Details
Part 1: Oxfordshire on Canvas
The county of Oxfordshire, its towns and the city itself have inspired artists since the Elizabethan era. This talk is an exploration of the landscape of the county as recorded and interpreted by artists. The county has been fortunate to have had so many well respected painters observing and representing its varied landscape.
Martin will illustrate the talk with original photographs of the places themselves alongside the paintings.
Part 2: Oxfordshire and the Pre-Raphaelites
The city of Oxford plays a crucial part in the development of Pre-Raphaelitism. Using original photographs and research, Martin explores town and country settings connected with the movement and its principal adherents. Many of the early groundbreaking paintings are connected with Oxford and its nearby villages. Later developments such as the murals at The Oxford Union, the architecture of The University Museum and stained glass in city churches and colleges are brought to life in this illustrated talk.
Martin uses original photographs in this talk, many from Oxford's Ashmolean Museum and on location in Wytham, Binsey, and the city.
