Tutor Ruth Smith
10am - 4pm
This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for a variety of levels from complete beginner to those more advanced.
Workshop Details
This book is an ingenious combination of origami and book making. It is inspired by a Chinese folk-art tradition from SW. China where wallet-like books containing 3D boxes and twist fold pockets were used to store embroidery threads and precious family mementoes. Students on this workshop can expect to make a book with 15 opening sections. A requirements list with suggestions for suitable papers and a cutting layout are provided beforehand so that the paper is cut ready for folding. Step by step instructions are given along with ideas for decoration from finished examples and Chinese originals with their colourful woodblock prints, geometric patterns, and stylised motifs. Students will be shown how to attach a cover with a wrap tie to add a finishing touch. Folded Secrets books are interesting to construct, fun to decorate and are surprisingly capacious.

Preparation
As there is a lot of folding and sticking to do during the day, you will find it more than helpful to cut out all the necessary pieces of paper before the workshop. The tutor will not have time to assist with cutting out on the day of the workshop. Use the layout provided below as a guide and label each piece of paper inconspicuously with the appropriate letter in pencil.
Please Bring With You
- CLICK HERE to access the pdf of the materials and the cutting layout you will need.
- The school can provide a large cutting mat should you need to borrow one.
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a workshop more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a workshop is cancelled due to low enrolment and global pandemics.
