This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for beginners. If you can thread a needle and sew on a button, you have all the sewing skills you will need!
Workshop details
During this fun packed, busy course, Jacqueline will teach you all the skills and techniques required to make traditional handmade Gathered & Pleated lampshades.
Extremely popular and in vogue at the moment, they offer the perfect opportunity to add a chic pop of colour and texture to an overall scheme, lifting a space and adding a touch of glamour. The cute little lampshade you will be making in this course has pinch pleats to the top ring and soft gathers to the bottom ring.
Only minimal sewing experience is necessary, therefore this course is suitable for both the beginner and more experienced, enthusiastic sewer. Jacqueline will teach you all the skills and techniques you need to know.

- Suitable frames for gathered/pleated lampshades and reconditioning vintage frames
- Useful lampshade making tools & equipment
- Binding the frame
- Fabrics for gathered/pleated lampshades
- Lining fabric options – fire risk/solution dynamics
- Bias – suitable options
Week 2
- Measuring & cutting your face fabric
- Pinch pleating to the top ring
- Lampshade stitch to face fabric
- Gathering to the base ring
- Stitching to increase tension
- Securing edges
- Securing lining to the bottom ring
- Pleating in the top ring
- Lampshade stitch to lining
Week 3
- Bias for Gimbals & Trim
- Measuring, cutting & prepping bias
- Fitting & securing Bias Trim

- Lampshade frame
- Lining - 100% cotton tana lawn – enough for one lampshade
- Cotton India tape – enough for one lampshade
- Thread – Terko – strong soft furnishings thread
- John James needles # 1
You will also need:
- 1m Face fabric plus matching thread (ideas for this will be discussed in week 1)
- 1m Contrast fabric plus matching thread (ideas for this will be discussed in week 1)
- Fabric glue (options will be discussed in week 1)
- Frey stop (options will be discussed in week 1)
- Personal sewing kit
- Dressmaking/fabric scissors
- Small sharp pointed scissors (sprung loaded micro tip work best)
- Fine tip marker
- Glass headed pins - LOTS
- Cutting board/crafting mat (optional)
- Quilting ruler (optional)
