Tutor: Sarah Hemmings

Mon 19th April 10am - 11:30am (UK time)

This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for students who want to develop their crochet skills. You will ideally know how to do a slip knot and a chain stitch before beginning the class.
This course will include a full 90-minute tutorial, with step-by-step handouts to help you create your granny squares at home after the class.

Workshop details

During this session we will explore several different types of granny squares, including traditional, solid and free. We will discover how to create endless possibilities by changing up the yarn, adding texture and additional detailing. We will also explore some different borders and look at different ways to attach the squares together to create a blanket.

Once you have mastered the basic crochet stitches (a granny square is always a good place to start, as it can create the most beautiful blanket) you can begin to create a whole array of wonderful squares, using different yarns, different techniques, mixing colours and so much more.

There will be tutor demonstrations, close ups on stitches and how and where to insert your hook, along with plenty of opportunities for asking questions!

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • Which hooks to use for different projects
  • The different yarns available and how each one differs in a crochet project
  • How to hold a crochet hook
  • How to build an essential crochet tool kit
  • How to do a slipknot to start off any project
  • How to create a foundation chain and how to count chains
  • How to do a double crochet, half treble crochet and treble crochet

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee.  All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

  • Any size crochet hook, it is a good idea to buy a pack of all sizes
  • Yarn in any colours (Sarah recommends acrylic yarn to start off with)
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

It would be helpful to have the materials to hand whilst watching the live demonstration, but you will not crochet a full granny square during the class.  There will be elements of the workshop where stitching along could be useful as a learning tool, but the demo session will mainly be a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch (and crochet along to) as many times as you wish for thirty days.
