This one-day, onsite workshop is designed for those who have been on the first indigo dyeing workshop or at least had some experience in Indigo dyeing

Workshop Details
Refresh and update your indigo knowledge and techniques to create a range of fabrics in indigo blue, rich brown and white. This is a follow up to the indigo dyeing and shibori techniques you learned in part one of this workshop

Taking the indigo fabrics you have already dyed, you will learn how to make up a dye bath of  potassium permanganate to discharge the blue cloth to a rich brown. You will then learn how to discharge the brown sections of your cloth back to its original colour. The indigo vat will be available to create new fabrics if necessary

Skills & Techniques Covered
Refresh knowledge on preparing an indigo vat. Clamping, folding and tying techniques to create resist patterns. Use these techniques to overdye and discharge.

Materials
Materials are not included in your booking fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £5, payable to the tutor during the class. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

Students Please Bring
  • Natural fabrics and threads such as cotton, wool and silk to dye all these will need to have been prewashed to remove any dressing. You may wish to bring indigo fabrics that you have dyed on a previous workshop.
  • I suggest you bring plenty of light to medium weight cotton to experiment with before you use anything more expensive.  You may wish to order some hand-rolled silk scarves.
  • Plastic bags to take damp cloth home in.
  • You should also bring a variety of screws, buttons, washers, bulldog clips, clothes pegs, clamps, rubber bands and string or strong thread/dental floss for tying the cloth before dyeing it. Needle and strong thread. Paint brushes, stamps, roller any mark-making equipment.
  • This will be a messy day, so wear old clothes and overalls, you may also wish to bring rubber gloves.

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
