Mon 9th August 10am - Noon (UK time) workshop demo and Q&A
This online workshop forms part of our first ever Summer School and is designed to offer an introduction to textual art for absolute beginners and those wishing to expand on their current lettering knowledge
Workshop Details
In this two-hour workshop, Simon will talk you through what he see's as the meaning of Textual Art. Using a few slides he'll be discussing the difference between Textual Art vs Text In Art and Readability vs Legibility. He will also show a few examples of work by artists such as Thomas Ingmire and Denis Brown that inspired him to move away from traditional calligraphy.
He will be demonstrating a selection of techniques from both of his books, together with examples of his work, to illustrate how these techniques can be incorporated into larger pieces and inspire you to create your own. It's all about creating layers and depth and to emphasize that some letters and words are meant to be seen and not read...legibility and readabilty are not the same thing.
About Textual Art:
"The main message I like to get across in my workshops is that there are no rights or wrongs in Textual Art. As soon as you introduce rules you introduce pressure; as soon as you introduce pressure you remove pleasure; and if there’s no pleasure, then what’s the point? Another thing to remember is that it’s okay to sometimes create a piece you don’t like - it will help you better understand why you don’t like it. As with anything, you’ll build experience through trial and error...
...as we embark on the techniques ahead, let me emphasise that it's the depth in Textual Art that's one of the most important aspects to strive for. Because without this depth there is little interest on the page – the image feels flat and allows the viewer to glide by without a glance. Instead, Textual Art must keep revealing itself at every new visit. It's this depth I endeavour to incorporate into every new piece because this in turn brings two unique things to each piece of art you create: Impact & Intrigue."
In this taster session, Simon will be demonstrating a selection of the following techniques:
Equipment & Materials List:
This list is for guidance only. You may decide that you have tools or objects that will do the job just as well. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
