ArtTalk details
Sir Frederic Leighton was a nineteenth century artist of international importance. He was a most gifted draughtsman and sculptor, highly respected in both European academies and fêted England. His works are an intelligent mixture of classicism and aestheticism.
After the nineteenth century his work, like so many Victorian artists, fell out of favour, however Leighton’s reputation has steadily risen in the past thirty years and his work is now rightly celebrated. Martin uses many original photographs of Leighton’s work and gives a full background to his life and times. This talk will look at Leighton in a European context and demonstrate how British academic art rivalled that of late nineteenth century France.
