ArtTalk details
Sargent was a highly important American expatriate artist. In the late nineteenth century he was considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation.” Sargent is among the most skilled artists who has ever lived, he was also enormously prolific, creating roughly 1,000 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolours. His clients were some of the most celebrated figures of the times.
Sargent’s unofficial non- commissioned work is often less well known. The talk looks at his friendship with Claude Monet, and Sargent's own variety of Impressionism. The talk will show him to be both a versatile and innovative painter. His reputation, like so many artists of the early twentieth century fell to a low point, but has once again risen with admirers around the world.
