ArtTalk details
Most people think of Millais’ as the Pre-Raphaelite painter of masterpieces such as Ophelia and Autumn Leaves, yet often know less about the variety and brilliance of his later career. Martin focuses on the twenty six Scottish landscapes of his mature career; brilliantly painted and often bleakly unpicturesque.
These works had a strong impression upon the public imagination and were an influence on the young Vincent Van Gogh. Each of these large scale plein-air works are remarkable in their technique and observation, recalling places dear to the artist’s heart on Tayside. Martin uses present day location photographs to illustrate this talk.
This talk echoes the examination of Millais's portraits which Martin gave last year.
