Speaker: Melanie Blaikie
Fri 17th September 10am - 11:15am (UK time)
ArtTalk details
Join Melanie Blaikie, with her background in fine jewellery (having designed for Mappin & Webb, Garrard, Asprey, and Tiffany), for an hour of history, intrigue and fabulous jewels.
An insider's guide to the secret history of brooches. How from humble beginnings as a simple fastener, they've become the most desirable and decorative of jewels.
But there's more to brooches. Over the years they've been treasured mementoes of a loved one and conveyed secret messages of religious or political allegiance. We'll look at brooches from the simple to the spectacular, brooches whose famous owners have changed history. Right up to a rather famous brooch that made a particularly pertinent comment about our own Prime Minister.
Wearing your own favourite brooch is optional but highly recommended!
Melanie's upcoming talk The Secret History of Tiaras follows on beautifully from this one.
