This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal as a follow on for those who have attended an acrylics workshop with Karen before, but is also open to any students who have some basic knowledge and experience of using acrylic paints.
Workshop details
Acrylics are a wonderful versatile medium that can be used in a huge variety of ways – watercolour style; thick and luscious like oil paint; layered and combined with other media….and anything in between! It is a very forgiving medium – if you don’t like something just paint over it!
This three-part workshop aims to build on your basic techniques through a variety of approaches and projects, in a relaxed & informative way. A basic knowledge of acrylics is needed, as we explore mediums, additives and different ways of using the paint.
Session 1: Sea, Sand & Sky: Using simple coastal imagery we will look at ways to paint water – light, movement, reflections. We will then use aggregates & texture paste (bought or home-made) to create rocks, pebbles, sand etc. Finishing off with approaches to painting sky.
Session 2: Still Life in an Oil Style: this is all about using acrylics in layers….building up brush marks over a coloured ground and using mediums to give a rich painterly feel….looking at the work of Cezanne and contemporary artists for inspiration. We will also look at the use of glazing and varnishing to enhance an ‘oil style’ painting.
Session 3: Fabulous Flowers: We will initially water down our acrylics to play with techniques stolen from watercolour painting, creating a loose impression of our subject. Gradually we will add in opaque colour, expressive mark-making and additional media to create a lively interpretation of fabulous flowers!
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
