Upcycled Mixed-Media Paper Cloth Book

About Janina
Picture
Further Detail
We will start the workshop by making sheets of paper-cloth by laminating decorative, recycled and tissue papers onto muslin. Once dry they can be decorated with paints and inks and we will cover techniques of making our own stamps, stencils and printing blocks.

The sheets cross the boundary between paper and fabric and are quite sturdy, so they can be easily cut, glued and sewn.

On the second day we focus on using the sheet to make a notebook, a wallet, and a small stitched collage. These can be further decorated with hand stitch, and with beads, sequins or other embellishments.

This is an ideal course if you want to try something a bit different and are happy to experiment with the materials.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • Selection of appropriate papers to use for paper cloth
  • Lamination of muslin, papers and tissue together
  • How to make your own stamps and stencils
  • Introduction to bookbinding skills including making a pamphlet stitch booklet with closure

Level
Suitable for all levels including complete beginners

Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee.  Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £10, payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

Your tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

Please Bring With You
  • Apron
  • Two large paintbrushes. Cheap house decorating ½ inch to 1 inch are best. One will be used for glue and one for ink
  • 4 or 5 tubes of acrylic paint in your choice of colours, including at least one metallic if possible (gold, silver, or bronze). Student grade or craft paints are fine.
  • Basic sewing kit: needles, scissors
  • Metal edged ruler
  • Basic drawing tools: pencil, eraser, sharpener
  • Bookbinding tools if you have them (or they can be borrowed from the tutor, or a few tools will be available to purchase on the day):
  • Bone folder,
  • Awl or braddle for making holes,
  • T square ruler

  • Optional
All materials are provided but if you have any specific papers you want to add into the sheets, such as images, receipts, menus, tickets etc please bring them (note: thin papers work best especially if you will be adding further stitching).

  • Threads, beads and sequins are provided but again if you have any specific items or embellishments you want to work with please bring them.
  • Sewing machine and a few threads if you wish to add machine stitching (day 2)

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
