This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for those with some lettering experience.
Workshop details
In his first workshop with Ardington ONLINE, Thomas will be exploring the wonder of adding shadows to your lettering.
Every script done with a broad edge nib can be turned into a 3D version by adding shadow elements to your strokes. This mind-boggling effect can be used to enhance your greeting cards or other calligraphy projects.
But you don’t necessarily need a calligraphic tool to create letters or words with a 3D effect. We will also be exploring an exercise that will enable you to create 3D letters with any ordinary monoline tool, even your own handwriting.
Finally, we'll move on to combine broad edge nib letters with monoline extensions, creating “block-letters” which you can then add shadow to again.
During this work along workshop, every exercise will be demonstrated by Thomas and explained step-by-step, with time to then try it yourself during the class and to ask lots of questions. The samples we use in class will be based on an Italic style but you can use any broad edge pen hand you are familiar with.
After the demo you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

- Automatic pen, nib size 3A or 4
- Ink in a light transparent color (Thomas recommends Ecoline Liquid Watercolour Ink)
- 2B drawing pencil or softer
- A4 light pad
- Mechanical pencil, 0.5 or 0.3
- Short ruler (about 6 in)
- Pigment liner, 05 or 03
