Wed 18th January 2pm - 5pm
Our brand new 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in the work of Katsushika Hokusai and is open to students of all abilities. Apart from your notepad and pen, you needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this class.
Workshop details
In this, the third of our new series, Martin Beek and Karen Carter will be taking an in-depth look at the woodblock prints of revered Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai.
ArtTalk
Martin will offer an overview of the life of Hokusai, before focusing on his Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) and the influence that they had on future artists, such as the Provincetown Printers.
Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the blackboard.
Demonstration
Taking inspiration from the great Japanese masters like Hokusai, and subsequently the Provincetown Printers, we will explore a gentle and absorbing printing technique that captures the flavour of the traditional processes in a much simpler form that you can replicate at home.
You will carve your designs into Asian ply creating an outline within which to print. Inking is done by hand with watercolours or gouache and produces attractive subtle prints to create ‘Whiteline’ woodcuts.
Karen's demonstration will be accompanied by templates and step-by-step written instructions, shared via the blackboard, offering a wonderful downloadable resource for you to use for years to come.
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
