Workshop Details
Investigate the full potential of these sturdy, accessible cartridge pens to explore lively calligraphy in many different scripts. Play with colour combinations & blending and see what happens when you combine thick & thin strokes. Pilot Parallel Pens are essentially fountain pens with broad edge nibs, ideal for free flow writing as well as more careful work. It’s helpful to have contrasting sizes of the pens but beginners can manage with one.
The Italic hand is ideal for these experiments as it’s adaptable for fast and slow speeds of writing and variations, but we’ll also focus on free capitals. Writing on the narrow edge gives us a thin line that contrasts well with the broad edge that’s the pen’s primary function. If you hold one pen nib against another they exchange inks and you can play with streaky effects, too.
Those with Italic experience will want to try more advanced techniques of combining the thin and thick line for lively and three-dimensional effects.
