This three-day, onsite workshop is suitable for all levels including beginners with a little lettering experience

Workshop Details
There are times in our calligraphic journey when we might ask the question, “what next?”

After having achieved a modicum of skill and success, our letters beautiful and well-applauded, we may experience a nagging feeling that there is something missing. But What? Where once we had clarity of vision, now our direction seems vague, unclear. Or maybe we are simply curious about using mixed media and trying a more intuitive, experimental approach to our creative work. Whatever one’s level of experience or skill, this workshop offers a “re-visioning” opportunity for calligraphers to discover for themselves where their direction may lie.

The only prerequisite is a willingness to embrace an attitude of discovery and surprise in letting go of pre-conceived ideas of what kind of art you will make. My hope for all participants in our co-created atmosphere of safety and trust is that “maybe we’ll find direction around some corner where it’s been waiting to meet us.” *(Grateful Dead)

We will be making a series of improvisational artworks on larger pieces of paper, some of which will be torn down to make a journal of our personal class odyssey. Using a “Heroine’s Journey” as a conceptual framework, the class will embark on a time of symbol and mark making, writing, drawing, calligraphy and painting, connected to our direct and immediate personal experience. Participants can “revision” their ideas of calligraphic art-making by exploring writing as gesture, line and pattern, while using nature, pictures, found objects and even one’s own words as inspiration. We will veer off the familiar calligraphic path for the purpose of exploration and discovery, to make deeper connections with ourselves, our art and the world around us.
