Workshop details
The broad brush opens up new avenues for calligraphy, and the Uncial hand is an ideal script with which to practise the tool, owing to its simple, chunky, round forms. Enjoy the texture the brush makes and learn to write a short text.

First we’ll examine the brush’s qualities, how to keep its working edge sharp and how to hold it for best results. As the brush feels quite different from the pen it can take a while to adjust to how much pressure to use, but once that’s understood we can explore the versatility of this tool when it’s manipulated. Proficiency with the brush comes with practice, so we’ll follow some stroke exercises to develop the skill, working towards the Uncial letterforms.

The Uncial hand, being rounded and relatively simple in shapes – and no capitals versus lower-case to worry about, it’s just one alphabet – is the perfect vehicle for getting to grips with the brush. There are optional versions of some letters which accommodate everyone’s taste, and if the manipulation part is a step too far, there are easier ways.

The look of the letters can also be varied by how wet the paint is – so we’ll investigate opaque, transparent and textured effects.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • How to hold the brush to retain its writing edge
  • Techniques for manipulating the brush for more complex results
  • How to achieve opaque, textured and transparent letters.
  • Understanding the Uncial letterform

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Mary will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.

After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard.  You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.

We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
