Workshop details
Bâtarde is a book hand that developed in northern France in the 15th century & used in the richly illuminated books for the aristocracy.  Gothic Bâtarde has the characteristics of the heavy and black Gothic hand of that period but has a vigorous swing and a more rounded appearance which gives a delightful cursive movement to the script.

In this workshop, we will enjoy writing in cursive Bâtarde hand that evolved from the Gothic scripts. It is a lively and more dancing hand than the rigid Gothic and slightly sloped, with many very interesting pen angle changes and manipulated pen movements that are fun to do. The capitals are wide and flamboyant. Bâtarde should be written stylishly and confidently.  We will modernize and develop it further if we have time. Consider writing some prose in French or Latin, with English translation, to perhaps make it more appealing!

The workshop will be both informative and enjoyable and Jan will offer individual feedback on your work during the follow up session, if you would like it.
You are very welcome to work along with Jan during the workshop demo if you would like, or you can just sit and watch if you would prefer.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • To learn the basic construction of the Bâtarde Script, letter height, slant etc.
  • To understand its origins
  • To learn how to manipulate the pen to create the subtle & lively shapes
  • To be shown how to adapt the letters to create more modern calligraphy
  • To create a piece of written work in this script

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Jan will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.

After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard.  You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.

We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

*The follow up session is not recorded to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work with the rest of the class, and receive personal feedback, without feeling self-conscious about being recorded.  We would encourage you all to join us live if you can – even if you were signed up as a ‘recording only’ participant for the workshop.
