Workshop details
We are often asked how to capture the beauty of specific textures and surfaces in our drawing classes. This two-part workshop is the second in a short 'Surfaces' series we are running this year, all focused on using coloured pencil to explore the different surface properties of objects.
In these two workshops, Jonathan will teach you how to draw metal objects. During the first session you will be shown how to achieve the shiny, reflective quality of an object such as a door handle, and in the second we will look at capturing the rusty qualities of a garden padlock.
Techniques covered will include keeping your edges sharp, tracing down, layering flat colours, leaving highlights and burnishing to a smooth surface. It is an ideal class for students who want to improve their skills and learn what can be achieved with a coloured pencil.
Jonathan will provide reference photos for you to print and work from at home, and we will complete one drawing in each session. The second session includes additional time for personal feedback on any work you have completed from week one or have worked on during week two.

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Jonathan will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

- A4 or equivalent pad of smooth, white drawing paper
- A small set of coloured pencils or a selection of individual pencils in as many different colours as possible. Suggested makes: Derwent, Faber Castell, Caran D'ache, WH Smith own brand
- 2B and 4B (or softer) pencil
- Eraser
- Pencil sharpener
