Workshop Details
This workshop is an introduction to the art of Islamic floral illumination. By taking inspiration from historic manuscripts and textiles, in particular from Ottoman tulips designs, students will paint a stylized floral pattern using traditional Islamic painting and gilding techniques.
We will explore principles of symmetry in stylised Islamic floral designs to draw a composition together. Students will be introduced to traditional paper preparation methods and will be shown how to make and paint with 23ct gold paint, traditionally known as ‘shell gold’. Students will then be taught the traditional halkar shading technique to paint and gild their own floral inspired pattern or one prepared by the tutor.
Skills and Techniques Covered
