Our 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in the work of Henri Matisse and is open to students of all abilities.
Workshop details
In this exciting hybrid class, Martin Beek and Karen Carter will be taking an in-depth look at the collages of French visual artist, Henri Matisse.
ArtTalk
Martin will offer an overview of the life and varied works of Henri Matisse, before focusing in on the cut paper collages he produced in the latter part of his life. From 1930 onwards, his work took a bolder, more simplified form, but it was a period of poor health in the early 1940's that led him to work solely in the medium of paper cut outs. We will look at examples from this period of his life for inspiration for our practical project.
Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.
Demonstration
Taking our inspiration from Matisse’s collages we will first paint our own papers to work with. Using a simple still life setup as our starting point we will then ‘draw with scissors’, creating bold stylized shapes – using both positive, negative and outline shapes – to provide us with the basis for our compositions.
Working with limited colours and a restricted number of elements we can then build a series of related collages in a semi-abstract style. These can be little works of art in their own right or a stepping stone to further development, lending themselves to reinterpretation in paint, print and even textiles.
Karen will provide templates and written instructions to work from, however this is a perfect technique for experimenting with your own compositions and ideas as you can endlessly move your elements around before committing to a final layout…..a very forgiving process!
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

Inspiration:
A selection of simple objects in varying shapes such as fruit, jugs, plates, placemat – a pattern element also adds interest (either in the ceramic items or in the placemat / table-cloth for the items to sit on)
Papers:
- For the base of your collages you'll need something sturdy! Heavy watercolour paper / thick cardboard/ MDF or plywood (painted white) would all work well
- Tracing paper or greaseproof paper
- Photocopy paper or lightweight cartridge
- Optional - deli paper or wet-strength tissue for semi-transparent layers.
Paints, glue, tools etc:
- Acrylic paints - primary colours and white, plus any others you may have
- Large brushes and/or sponges (plus a couple of smaller brushes if you have them)
- Mixing palette, kitchen roll, water pot
- Optional: Paint markers such as Posca Pens if you have them or crayons / oil pastels
- For sketchbook studies a glue-stick is fine
- For finished pieces or images where further paint may be added, acrylic gel matt medium is best, although PVA would be okay.
