Workshop Details
Italic is the most popular calligraphic script owing to its flowing nature and adaptability for expressive works. Start from scratch or revise if you’re rusty, using traditional broad-edged dip pens to create some beautiful writing.
Starting with some pen pattern-making to get the pens working and flowing properly, we’ll practise regular strokes to develop a rhythm for writing. Italic forms depend on a ‘family resemblance’ of letters, so there will be much emphasis on good arch-formation - how the strokes are joined, a distinctive feature which underpins a majority of the letters.
Putting the writing to practical use is what motivates us to keep going and hone our skills, so we’ll make labels, signage or arrange a short quotation. For those with past experience, this is your chance to lose bad habits and aim to improve and complete something to be proud of.
Pens, ink & paper will be provided for use, with the option to buy the pen if you wish.
Please let us know if you are left-handed, as there are left-oblique pens available.
Skills/Techniques Covered
- Familiarity with the dip pens
- Making pen patterns for rhythm in writing
