Class details
Start off the new year with a new skill! Have some creative fun developing border patterns and simple repeat images to make decorative labels, bookmarks, or borders for gifts or maybe to enhance calligraphy.
Although originally developed as pre-calligraphy practice, these patterns are just fun to make, and it’s up to you where you choose to add them in your own creative work. No calligraphy skills are expected.
Starting with simple zigzags we’ll explore more complex repeat forms, then you start combining them, building them up, trying two sizes of pen, or two colours, and suddenly more ideas start to occur, and it gets quite addictive. We'll also look at making designs and simple images such as stars, flowers, seagulls to open a new area of exploration.
Work-along with Mary during the class, or just watch & learn; the choice is yours! No experience needed, this is just pattern-making for the sheer pleasure of it.
Specific skills you will learn
- Using a broad-edged pen and maintaining a specific pen angle
- Skill with repetition of marks
- Developing decorative combinations
- Understanding how colour, size and weight affect the pattern
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Mary will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
