Class details
In this class, Maggie will show you a number of techniques which can be used to enhance backgrounds or be developed into a composition. They include crumpling (yes, literally screwing up your work!), use of Chinese liquid ink and washing up liquid, stencilling, and resists.
The crumple technique works well as a background or can be used in a landscape composition. The inclusion of washing up liquid creates unusual background effects, and the resists we will be experimenting with include white paint, clear gesso or milk. We'll look at how stenciling can be used to create an impressive moon.
Maggie will begin by demonstrating the various techniques, before giving you ideas on how to turn them into a successful picture. These techniques are experimental so it is a good idea to "play" first as the results are often unexpected!
In the follow up session, Maggie will offer her feedback on anything you have been working on at home during the week, before showing some more examples of her work and perhaps an additional technique or two, if there's time!
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Maggie will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
*The tutor feedback section of our follow up session is not recorded. This is to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work without feeling self-conscious. Please join us live for this session if you can – even if you chose the ‘recording only’ option above. Rest assured that any additional tutor demonstrations will be recorded and shared.
