Our 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
Course details
In this exciting hybrid class, Martin Beek and Jo Dixon will be taking an in-depth look at the often overlooked landscapes of Austrian symbolist, Gustav Klimt.
ArtTalk
Martin will start by offering an overview of the life of this revered artist, before focusing in on his collection of landscapes. Known for his symbolism and opulence, the landscapes show a different side to his work.
Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.
Practical Demonstration
Taking inspiration from the paintings 'Farm Garden with Sunflowers', 'Birch Forest', and 'The Tranquil Pond', Jo will focus on exploring the distinctive techniques of his style. We'll look at the impressionistic surface pattern of layered brushstrokes, flattened composition, and the combination of abstract and naturalistic elements which make these paintings so original and fascinating.
During the class, you will learn how to work in his style using a mixture of observation of nature and a decorative construction. Following the rich colour palette (and maybe a touch of gold!) you'll achieve vivid images that capture a tranquil mood and celebrate the nature of life.
Jo will demonstrate the techniques and guide you through creating a painting using your own imagery as inspiration.
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Jo will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
