Workshop details
This class is the second in our 'Studio ONLINE' series - the closest we've come to replicating our onsite 'in studio' classes, online. Spend a whole day learning and creating, surrounded by a class of like-minded students, all from the comfort of your own home.
Taking inspiration from the rich resources of your garden (or a garden of your choice), we will spend the day exploring and combining paper and fabric in this fun & informal Textile Art workshop. We will each work to create a folded book of fabric & paper samples and an original textile piece full of exciting colour, pattern and texture.
Jo will encourage you to use found materials such as bubble wrap, corks, and textured wallpaper to paint and print onto your fabrics to create exciting and inspiring mixed media bases. Over the course of the day you will develop them further by adding detail and drawings in stitch, as well as embellishments such as buttons, beads, and found treasures.
Following feedback from the first class, we have changed the structure a little this time around. Students are invited to join us online from 9:45am to say hello to your fellow classmates. The morning teaching session will start promptly at 10am and Jo will be leading a work-along session dedicated to the exploration of paint and print. You'll be creating samples and backgrounds which then have a chance to dry out over lunch.
We'll all take a break from the screen around 12pm. Take some time to stretch your legs, rustle up a sandwich and a grab a cup of tea before we start again, fully refreshed, at 1pm for a relaxing work-along afternoon of hand-stitching and decoration. The session will finish up around 3pm.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Techniques for painting and mark-making on fabric
- Printing and using stencils
- Simple dye techniques
- Collage and applique techniques
- Drawing with stitch
- Adding hand-sewn embellishments
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Jo will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recordings of any tuition sessions on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
