Class details
Next up in our 'Printing without a Press' series is this two-hour gel plate printing class with Janina Maher.
Janina will teach you how to use a gel plate to take prints of plants which resemble cyanotype prints. Then we will learn how to make a concertina book to fill with those beautiful blue prints.
Firstly, we will make a series of prints of leaves using a gel plate. These prints will be inspired by the shapes, patterns, and colours of cyanotype – i.e. blue prints. The prints will mainly be made using the ‘mask’ printing and ‘ghost’ printing techniques. This part of the class is work along for those that have the materials to hand.
Once we have a batch of prints to work with, Janina will show you how to make an A5 concertina book from scratch using two of the prints (on thicker paper) for the covers, and a study cartridge paper for the inside pages. Those who wish to work along will be given the directions to trim your boards and inside papers in advance to save a bit of time in class!
We'll finish the class with a demonstration of ways to cut, arrange, and glue your prints into the pages of the concertina book to make an attractive and cohesive whole work.
This class is suitable for beginners so don’t worry if you have never done any gel plate printing or bookmaking before – all techniques will be fully explained and demonstrated.
Specific skills you will learn
- Simple gel plate printing using leaves and grasses
- Preparing paper and board to make a handmade book
- Creating a concertina book from scratch
- Collage techniques
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Janina will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
