Class details
‘Gestural’ calligraphy could be described as “calligraphy made energetic”. A step beyond flourishing, gestural work encourages boldness and controlled, but generous, arm movements. It’s fun to try, and helps develop a visual repertoire of effective calligraphic marks; always a useful skill.
Mary will take you through a series of simple actions to practice in stages, which then build up to create dynamic letterforms. Assembling those letterforms to work together into words forces us to appreciate internal shapes and combinations that we might not have discovered otherwise.
You are encouraged to work-along with Mary during the class, so that we can answer questions in real time about anything you don't quite understand. However, this is not essential - if you would prefer instead to watch and try later, that's fine too.
Specific skills you will learn
- Which tools work best for gestural work
- How to develop free movements
- Appreciating the shapes made and the white space inside
- Assembling strokes into letters
- Pulling shapes together to create a pleasing whole
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Mary will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
