Class details
Join us on the first of our 'Towards Abstraction' series as we delve into the world of abstraction – or at least take a few steps in that direction! This series of workshops is designed to push your ideas and working methods away from realism and towards a more abstracted interpretation of your subject matter. We will look at different artists each session as inspiration and starting points, encompassing a variety of approaches - line, colour, shape, pattern, stylization, etc.
In this session we will begin with the basics of composition and mark-making, referencing the work of William Scott. Working mainly in monochrome with the use of limited spot colour we will explore how to create compositions that have balance, tension and coherence. We will also look at the way you put down marks using a variety of tools and approaches affects the dynamics and atmosphere of an abstract piece of work.
Each class can be taken as a stand-alone session and will have a strong practical techniques-based element. Throughout the series we will be looking at creative drawing techniques, serendipitous and intentional mark-making, colour choices, constructing textural surfaces, and working with mixed media.
This series is for anyone who wants to push their boundaries and is willing to explore & experiment – you don’t need to be able to draw or paint in the traditional sense – all you need is an open mind, your materials to hand, and a big apron!
Specific skills you will learn
- Exploring a single object in multiple ways
- Principles of composition in abstract works
- Playing with mark-making
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Karen will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
