Join us on the third of our 'Towards Abstraction' series as we delve into the world of abstraction – or at least take a few steps in that direction! This series of workshops is designed to push your ideas and working methods away from realism and towards a more abstracted interpretation of your subject matter. We will look at different artists each session as inspiration and starting points, encompassing a variety of approaches - line, colour, shape, pattern, stylization, etc.
In this session we will look at a number of landscape artists, including Martin Proctor and Barbara Rae, who have strong elements of colour and pattern running through their work. Looking at the principles of mapping and flattening the picture plane to distort the illusion of depth, combined with stylizing elements of the landscape, we will create imaginative interpretations of this gentile and traditional genre.
Each class can be taken as a stand-alone session and will have a strong practical techniques-based element. Throughout the series we will be looking at creative drawing techniques, serendipitous and intentional mark-making, colour choices, constructing textural surfaces, and working with mixed media.
This series is for anyone who wants to push their boundaries and is willing to explore & experiment – you don’t need to be able to draw or paint in the traditional sense – all you need is an open mind, your materials to hand, and a big apron!
