Course details
This course forms part of our brand-new STUDY programme; a range of longer courses, running over a number of weeks, exploring our most popular subjects in greater depth. Combining tutor-led live classes with elements of self-study, these courses are designed to stretch and challenge you, whilst maintaining the small & friendly learning environment we are known for.
The course begins with an introduction to the history and origins of Tezhip, exploring its cultural significance and the evolution of this intricate art form. Students will gain insights into the traditional techniques and materials used in creating these beautiful patterns.
We will then dive into learning traditional floral motifs such as ‘Hatai’, ‘Gonca’, and ‘Penc’. Through detailed demonstrations and practical exercises, students will practice and master these motifs, developing a strong foundation in Tezhip design. The course also covers techniques for decorating the borders of Islamic manuscripts, allowing students to explore various styles “Halkar” and “Classic Tezhip” and methods for creating elegant and harmonious border and “Shamsa” designs. This will be complemented by lessons on the principles of composition and design, guiding students on how to create cohesive and aesthetically pleasing artwork.
In addition to motif and border design, students will learn traditional painting and outlining techniques specific to Tezhip. This includes mastering illumination brush techniques that bring these patterns to life with vibrant colors and intricate details.
The syllabus will include:
- Learning the historical background of the artform Tezhip
- Learning various traditional art Tezhip floral motifs
- Learning basics of designing pattern using motifs
- Learning various Shamsa forms
- Learning two painting styles in Tezhi; Halkar and classic Tezhip
- Learning using different paints suitable for the art style; gouache, watercolour, and acrylic
Each lesson will have specific focus, the skills from which will be further practiced during the homework assignments. Nagihan will review and critique any work you submit throughout the course.
