(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online gel printing workshop is designed for absolute beginners through to intermediate level.
This is a companion workshop to Gel Plate Printing (1) – Techniques. These workshops can be taken in any order. There will be a small element of overlap between the classes to cover basics.
Workshop details
Whether you would like to learn some more gel plate printing techniques, have a gel plate and never used it, or have no idea what gel plate printing is but would like to find out, then you are most welcome on this workshop. Taking nature as the theme Janina will demonstrate how to make a series of monoprints using a gel plate, and will introduce ideas for layering and also for working back into some of the prints to make more finished pieces. A gel plate is a perfect surface for making monoprints and there are a whole raft of different techniques we can use.
During this Inspired by Nature workshop, Janina will do a quick recap of care of the gel plate, suitable paints and papers to use, and mark making techniques. There will be handouts to accompany this workshop which will be sent out with the joining link.
Techniques for making prints including:
These techniques can be used for representational work or can be completely abstract pieces. Be prepared to experiment and you will quickly make a stack of unique prints.
In the follow up show and tell session, students are encouraged to bring along any gel plate prints they have made to show everyone else, and to ask any further questions they may have.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop:

- Gel plate. My preferred brands are Gelli Arts or Gel Press, and I mainly use the 10” by 8” size
- Acrylic paint 4 to 6 tubes in a mix of colours – The Pebeo and Hobbycraft brands work well because they are soft body ie slightly runny and a good price. Golden OPEN paints are excellent but expensive. Note - old thick paint does not work.
- Paper – Try different papers: white, black and coloured printer weight paper, sugar paper, smooth thin cartridge, maps, music paper, deli paper, wet strength tissue paper. Note - don’t use glossy photo paper as this will stick to your gel plate like glue!
- Roller (or brayer)
- Mark making tools – any objects that will make a mark or which have a texture (not sharp items!)
- For cutting masks and stencils - card or thin plastic, pencil, cutting mat and sharp knife
- To make foam stamps – thin foam sheet, scissors, double sided tape, sturdy card
- Perspex sheet for registration (I use an A4 size, 2mm thick Perspex sheet available from Amazon)
- Leaves, grasses and feathers
- Vegetables – shallots, mushrooms, carrots, celery (only 1 of each is needed)
- POSCA pens - to enhance prints (optional)
- Baby oil – for cleaning the gel plate
- Baby wipes – for cleaning the brayer / roller
