This onsite, acrylic painting workshop is designed for complete beginners and those wishing to revisit the medium

Workshop Details
This workshop is designed to explore the absolute basics of acrylic painting; from colour mixing using just the primary colours, to different ways of applying the paint (thick, thin, opaque, transparent) and the use of basic mediums. A fun and informal course, by the end of which students will have an understanding of the properties of acrylic paint, and how to use it.

We will start by exploring colour mixing using just the modern primaries….creating a variety of hues, tints and tones from just 3 colours plus black & white. From this we’ll produce a couple of colour sketches expanding our mixing skills. We will look at the many properties of acrylics in conjunction with different mediums and create a reference sampler of techniques borrowing from both watercolour and oil painting traditions, as well as exploiting the intrinsic fast-drying qualities of acrylics. There will be advice on types of brushes, making a cheap ‘stay-wet’ palette, suitable supports to work on and the difference between the many types of acrylic paints and inks available.

The aim of this workshop is not to produce a finished piece of work but to give you the skills and processes for using acrylics confidently at home, through a series of exercises and colour sketches.
There will be lots of step-by-step demos and individual help – absolutely no experience needed.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • Colour-mixing using modern primaries
  • Use of mediums and gels
  • Choosing brushes, palettes and papers
  • Different ways of using acrylic paint

Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £3.00…….payable to the tutor during the workshop. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

The tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your workshop involves buying materials from the tutor.

Students - please bring with you:
  • Watercolour paper x 3 sheets (approx. A4 or bigger)
  • Soft drawing pencil, rubber,
  • Acrylic paints – primaries: Process Cyan, Process Yellow, Process Magenta, White, Black
  • It is better to buy five tubes of a decent brand such as Daler System 3 or Winsor & Newton Galleria than a large set of a cheap brand.
  • Mixing palette with a large flat area (tear-off palettes or plates are fine) – we will make a small ‘stay-wet’ palette
  • Range of brushes:  bring whatever you have – the tutor will have some available to borrow and advise on what to buy
  • Kitchen sponge, palette knife if you have one (the tutor will have some available to borrow)
  • Kitchen roll, water pot,

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
