(UK timings)

This LivePlus™ online workshop is designed for complete beginners. It forms the perfect foundation from which to progress to Maggie's future online Chinese painting classes.

Workshop details
For the first time online, Maggie will introduce you to basics of Chinese painting - a distinct and beautiful art form that uses very different techniques to those often found in traditional western painting styles.

You will start with a brief history of Chinese painting, then Maggie will provide an explanation of the materials required and how they are used, followed by demonstrations of how to hold and load the brush and use it to make the basic strokes you need to produce a variety of subjects.

Maggie will be asking students to submit photographs of their work in the week following session one, so that she can tailor the feedback and demonstrations given in session two.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • The materials required for Chinese painting and how to use them
  • How to hold a brush
  • How to load a brush
  • The basic strokes needed to produce a variety of subjects

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

A kit for this course is available directly from Maggie at a cost of £22 including P&P (to UK students). The kit will include:
  • Two brushes - Lin Feng and small landscape
  • 10 sheets of grass paper
  • Liquid ink

For those students wishing to source their own materials, you will need:
  • One small / fine Chinese brush
  • One large Chinese brush
  • Chinese practice sheets or grass paper
  • Liquid ink

All students will also need:
  • Palette
  • Smooth absorbent cloth to cover your work surface
  • Painting rag or kitcehn roll
  • Two water pots

You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
