Join us as Janina shows you all the steps involved in making a buttonhole book with a cutaway spine.  The demonstration piece for this workshop will be a hard back landscape A6 book, with a decorative paper cover, book cloth spine detailing, cutaway spine, and buttonhole stitching.
 

Janina will demonstrate all the steps involved but there will be a few ‘here’s one I prepared earlier’ versions to speed things up. For this reason it may be best to watch the live demonstration first, and ask any questions, then make your book later in your own time using the video and detailed instructions for guidance. 

 

Janina will start by trimming card into the correct size for the book and will show how to make the cut away element. The front and back covers will be covered with a decorative paper, and the spine and hinge areas reinforced with bookcloth. The cover will then be placed under weight to dry flat.  She will then demonstrate how to trim the inside pages to fit, nesting the folded pages into ‘signatures’.
 

The final stage will be to sew the pages into the book cover using a long buttonhole stitch and linen thread.  All the stages will be fully demonstrated with lots of extra hints and tips along the way.
 

Once the book is finished Janina will show several variations of this style of book to give you some ideas how to take this book further.
