'A Year on the Coast' is a brand new series for 2026, brought to you by Karen Carter. Brought up in a seaside town in Sussex and inspired by her love of all things coastal, this series explores its many aspects through paint, print, and paper using a variety of techniques and materials. Each month is a stand-alone project rather than a progressive ‘how-to’ series, so you can join at any time without having done the previous sessions.
In this session we will combine paint with collage and mixed media to explore the liminal spaces of natural harbours and estuaries. We will create atmospheric semi-abstract images where land and water mix and merge in the ebb and flow of the tide….a constantly changing edgeland with ethereal shapes of mudflats, reedbeds, and softly defined shorelines, revealing remnants of old jetties and mooring posts on the ebb tide, transforming into a labyrinth of waterways and as the sea returns.
Working in a soft palette of muted colours we will create semi-transparent layers of printed and painted papers to build subtle layers, adding washes of colour to integrate the collage and blur the division between land and sea. Adding in a few structural elements to give focus to our compositions and some accents of colour, our images will be impressionistic and subtle.
You can work along with Karen during some parts of the sessions or follow the demos in your own time.
