Drawing and Sketching Still Life with Pencil is designed for students who want to master the fundamentals of pencil drawing.
Over the weeks you will learn how to observe shapes, proportions, light, shadow, texture, and composition through carefully arranged still life subjects such as autumn leaves and fruit, glass & metal objects, and seasonal items such as baubles, holly, and candles.
Jonathan will guide you step-by-step in how to use shading techniques, line work, proportion, layering with colour and tonal values to create realistic sketches.
Through hands-on exercises and detailed demonstrations, you will build confidence in capturing everyday objects with accuracy and artistic expression. By the end of the course, you will have developed strong sketching skills and a deeper understanding of classical pencil drawing techniques.
Each session will have specific focus, the skills from which will be further practiced during the homework assignments. Jonathan will review and critique any work you submit via the private class information page and live during class.
The photos shown above are examples of Jonathan's previous still life drawings; we will be working from a range of reference photos and still life set-ups which will be unique to this course. Details will be confirmed to you each week, ahead of class.
