ArtTalk details
More than 100 years after its original publication, a version of a cookery book by Mrs Beeton, often given as a wedding present, was to be found in most UK kitchens. However, there was much more to Isabella Beeton than just that one book to make her a household name.
First published in 1861, the Book of Household Management was a pioneering publication for Victorian women; from a source of culinary inspiration to reinforcing the female role as homemaker. However, in many ways, Mrs Beeton was far from a stereotypical woman of this period. In this talk we will explore her life, as well as some of the fascinating recipes and the social history of the early editions. You will never look at a cookery book in the same way again!
This talk follows on beautifully from Sharn's talk 'When Olive Oil was for Earache'.
