Tutor: Karen Carter
Wed 5th October 10am - 12pm
(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online workshop is an ideal follow on for Karen's Introduction to Acrylics, Acrylics: Layer by Layer or Acrylics - Watercolour Style class, but is equally suitable for beginners and improvers. No experience needed, just a big apron and a willingness to have a go.
Workshop details
In this two-hour workshop, Karen will show you how to use acrylics in an oil style. Explore ways of using your acrylics to mimic the lush buttery brushmarks and subtle glazing techniques of oil paint – combining all the benefits of a fast-drying paint with the painterly qualities of a traditional medium.
Looking at historic and contemporary oil-painters for inspiration and reference, we will explore ways to manipulate acrylics to create the rich effects of oil paint. Using various mediums we will bulk up the paint to make it thick and buttery, and conversely to make it transparent and subtle for glazing.
We will look at surfaces to paint on, brushwork, use of palette knives and techniques borrowed from oil-painting tradition to create small still life studies. We will finish with the use of varnishes to enrich colour & complete the look of an oil painting….all done with the convenience of a water-based paint!
We would encourage you to have your paints ready to work along with Karen during the class, but you could also or choose to just watch and learn - the decision is up to you. All students will be given access to the recording of the class, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
