In this exclusive class, Mary sets the challenge of designing, planning, and making a functional twined bag - a perfect project for those who have followed her one-year programme of twining classes.

This project will use some of the skills and techniques from previous classes in a project-based make. We will be drawing on skills from flat to form, bases, warps, pattern with colour/weave and finishing.

If you didn’t attend some of these classes you will need a basic knowledge of twining in particular flat to form, bases, warps, pattern. However, Mary will be demonstrating the key elements stage by stage, and there will be some flexibility in the materials, scale, shape and design of your twined bag.

The first class will introduce a design and planning element to the syllabus. We will be thinking about the types of materials which could be used for warps in the bag; considering diameter, flexibility, weight, suitability for warp addition. Also, how to estimate how much material might be needed! Then we will move onto the weft; diameter, colour (or not)– depending on the pattern. We will discuss the finished form of the bag, with options for a round or oval base.

To follow in the second class we will talk more about allowing the bag to find its own form, dictated by the warp additions. To move the basket from base to sides Mary will introduce a weave to reinforce a turn from base to siding. Then it will be time to add some pattern. This could be with colour, weave or both.

To finish Mary will show different ways of finishing the edge of the bag, plus talk about ideas for handles.  Please note that twining is a slow process; the project will not be completed during the two classes. Mary will provide all the information and skills required for you to complete the project in your own time.

This will be a great project for anyone who has attended some or all of Mary's online twining classes who wants to develop their skills further and apply them to a specific challenge!
