This ONLINE class is suitable for students of all abilities.
Versal letters in their simplest forms are pen drawn letters based on Roman Capitals and both historical and modern forms are made with compound strokes of the pen. In the 9th and 10th century manuscripts, Versal letters were used as single capital letters or as headings. Today, they are used as an alphabet in their own right: adaptable, elegant, and free.
We will begin with a brief history, followed by the basic letterforms; their structure, spacing and application. We will explore the many Versal variations: modern, manipulated and exaggerated, plus their use as decorative letters.
Skills Covered
Letter height and pen angles of the Versal letterform
