'Contemporary Watercolours’ is a brand new series for 2026, brought to you by Karen Carter.  Each month we will explore different techniques to build a library of skills, while creating fun projects to use as cards, wall-art or simply to keep in your sketchbooks.  You don’t need to have done previous watercolour workshops – each of these sessions can be enjoyed without prior experience.
 

In this session, we will take our inspiration from the work of Gustav Klimt, embracing the rich colours of autumn and dappled light through trees, to create a glowing woodland – complete with highlights of gold for a bit of bling!
 

We will begin with colour mixing exercises then go on to explore layering, sponging and masking techniques to capture the impression of a sunlit autumn woodland. Then we'll add in detail with linework using dip pens or coloured pencil, and a smattering of spattering! And a final touch of gold leaf or metallic paint to add a touch of opulence!
 

Indulge in a fun afternoon playing with paint and paper…the emphasis is on having fun with the materials and enjoying the process.  You can work along with Karen at a gentle pace or follow the demo in your own time.
