This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners and those with experience. Tips, tricks and shortcuts – Japanese-style woodcutting made easy!
Discover the ancient art of Japanese woodcut printing and learn how to make it fun, accessible and simple to do.
Taking inspiration from the Provincetown Printers, who developed the Whiteline Woodcut technique, we’ll carve our designs into Japanese plywood, creating an outline within which to print. Using watercolours or gouache, applied by hand, we’ll produce beautiful, subtle prints full of colour and character.
We’ll begin by exploring what makes a successful design for a Whiteline Woodcut. Templates will be provided if you’d like a little inspiration or prefer to work from an existing design.
Once your woodblock is prepared, we’ll transfer your design and look at different registration methods to help you create a full-colour print. After a demonstration of safe cutting techniques, you’ll learn how to ink and print using rice paste and watercolours. We’ll also experiment with layering colours and creating delicate speckled effects to bring your image to life.
This is a gentle, absorbing and rewarding printing technique, suitable for complete beginners and those with previous experience alike. It’s also ideal for printing at home, requiring very little space or equipment.
No previous experience needed! There will be plenty of demonstrations, tips and one-to-one guidance throughout the day.
