Creative Glass Fusing: Op Art & Mosaic
onsite glasswork workshop
Sun 14th June
10am - 4pm
Tutor: Shirley Eccles
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with experience
This class will be an exciting and adventurous class, and I am really looking forward to teaching it. During the day you will have the opportunity to extend your skills and techniques in glass fusing and slumping, while exploring new ways of working with colour, pattern and form.
The class is project-based and designed to encourage experimentation with a variety of different fusing ideas and glass materials. Throughout the workshop we will create a selection of small pieces, giving you the chance to try different techniques while developing your confidence and creativity with kiln-formed glass.
Project 1: Op Art
Inspired by the Op Art movement of the 1960s, this project explores how to create striking optical illusions within glass. You will learn techniques to suggest movement and depth, producing effects such as swelling, shifting or warping patterns within the piece. By experimenting with different colour combinations and carefully arranged patterns, you will create a unique and visually dynamic work of glass art.Project 2: Glass Fused Mosaic
In this project you will design an image using small pieces of glass arranged like a mosaic. The gaps between the pieces will be filled with fine glass powders, creating an intricate and colourful glass “painting.” Your mosaic will then be fused in the kiln to permanently bond the design together. You may choose to finish your piece either as a small wall hanging or as a shallow slumped platter, which will involve a second firing.Materials are not included in your booking fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor at an approximate cost of £45 - £50, depending on how much glass you use. This fee also includes all firing costs and is payable directly to the tutor during the workshop. Your completed projects will be taken away for kiln firing and posted back to you at a cost of £8.
