Ghostly Paintings
Wed 3rd December
2pm - 3:15pm UK Time
Tutor: Martin Beek
Bookings Close: 19 November
For the Christmas season what better than a good ghost story? Martin's 'Ghostly Paintings' talk will touch upon many aspects of the depiction of ghosts and the supernatural in Western painting.
The lecture is a rich miscellany of art from different epochs and the stories that inspired their creation. Expect Gothic Ruins, mists, nightmares, spectres, omens, legends, ghost ships, and visitations. Artists from Francisco Goya, Salvador Dali, Carel Weight to William Blake, Henry Fuseli, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The subject of ghosts in art is a surprisingly fruitful one and often comments profoundly on the artist's own psychology and the times in which they lived . Many of the images are powerful, thought provoking and eerie, the talk looks at aspects of Surrealism and the more poetically inclined works of the Nineteenth century Romantic painters.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each of the talks via the class information page.
