This class is suitable for students of all abilities and everyone is welcome.

Visual journals are a time honored way of responding to our inner and outer world.  Experimenting within the pages of a blank book allows us to experience the freedom of creative expression while discovering our own creative voice.  Here a process characterized by play, intuition, improvisation, and authenticity replaces a focus on skill level and mastery.

So, how do we begin?  With curiosity and intention to choose tools, colors, marks, scripts, images, words that appeal to us, without the usual concern of “did I get the right thing? Or am I a good enough artist?”

Think of this course as a catalyst and Sharon as a guide, offering a series of specific “jumping off” exercises and helpful perimeters designed to lessen fear, and ease your way into a blank book.

Included amongst these will be informal handwriting, calligraphy, writing, drawing, painting, collage prompts and techniques.  We will also explore composition and elements of design.  The intention is to begin a process which participants are encouraged to continue beyond the class.

In addition to working in blank books, students will have the opportunity to bind a simple journal.

Sharon Zeugin lives in Austin, Texas. In addition to calligraphy and teaching, Sharon’s passions include her family, drawing, painting, Samba, yoga, swimming, walking, Jungian psychology, spiritual inquiry, fine art, nature and music. During her artistic career, Sharon continues to explore journals as a medium of artistic expression and creative liberation. As a teacher, Sharon is most interested in helping others overcome their fear of the blank page.
