Our 'In the Style Of' classes bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a traditional class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by the super talented Karen Carter.  This wonderful collaborative class is inspired by Paul Klee's townscape paintings and is open to students of all abilities.

    ArtTalk
Martin will offer an overview of the life of Swiss-German artist Paul Klee, exploring his journey through Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism.

Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.

    Demonstration
Using the work of Paul Klee as our inspiration, we will create our very stylized tiny townscapes, using a variety of materials and techniques to emulate his subtle layered imagery.

We will look at using different starting points to create interesting compositions. Using letters and text as a basis we will develop structured doodles; working with limited colours we will take another approach using blocks of colour to create a loose grid as our starting point. Both will then be worked into a complex composition using layers of colour, pattern, lost & found edges and selective detail.

This is an optional work-along session utilising a number of fun techniques suitable for both watercolour or acrylics, to create quirky abstracted townscapes.
